Christian obedience often begins with plain things. Not grand plans. Not a public platform. Not a theory of renewal that never makes it into a man’s calendar, home, church, wallet, or tongue.

Here are eleven simple things Christian men can change now.

1. Make a Daily Habit of Bible Reading and Prayer

Begin with Scripture and prayer. Keep it simple enough to sustain. Read a chapter. Pray honestly. Confess sin. Give thanks. Ask for wisdom. Pray for your household, church, neighbors, and work.

Have a sense of piety in private. Become a man who hears God and speaks to God before speaking too much everywhere else.

2. Start a Household Budget

Many men do not need a more complicated financial life. They need a truthful one.

Write down what comes in, what goes out, what must be paid, what should be saved, what should be given, and what must stop. A budget is not a magic cure, but it is a basic act of household honesty.

Download the Standard Household Budget Worksheet and begin with what you actually have.

3. Never Complain About Your Job or Career Again

Instead, give thanks.

This does not mean your workplace is perfect, your employer is wise, or your career is exactly where you want it to be. It means grumbling is not a strategy for maturity.

Work heartily. Learn what you can. Improve what you can. Ask God for better opportunities without despising the provision already in your hand.

4. Get Coffee With an Elder or Spiritually Prominent Man

Find one of the elders or spiritually mature men in your local church and ask for time.

Laugh. Learn. Ask questions. Confess sin where appropriate. Receive correction. Get better.

Do not wait until your life is on fire before you seek the company of sober men. Ordinary counsel before a crisis is one of God’s quiet mercies.

5. Order Your Romantic Life Before God

If you are married, date your wife frequently and frugally. You do not need luxury to show attention. You need presence, planning, affection, and cheerfulness.

If you are not married, set aside would-be date night money into a savings account. Practice responsibility before desire has a household to affect.

If you have ruined your marriage or gotten a divorce, repent. Lean harder into the counsel named above. If it is practical and righteous, seek reconciliation.

If you are living with a woman you are not married to, ask a local church elder or pastor who knows you for counsel about making arrangements for a marriage covenant as soon as possible. Until you are married, move out and order the relationship before God with repentance, clarity, and obedience.

6. Read Aloud to Your Children

If you have children, read aloud to them frequently. Read Scripture. Read good books. Read slowly enough that the home learns to hear language, truth, courage, beauty, and delight.

Find inexpensive ways to show them that you value their time and presence. Children remember the moral weather of a home. Let them remember a father who was glad to be with them.

7. Start Homeschooling Immediately

This does not mean anyone has to quit a job tomorrow. It does not mean you need immediate financial ability to leave government schools. It means the first hour of Saturday morning can look different in your home.

Read Scripture. Work on math facts. Memorize a catechism question. Read a paragraph of history. Copy a sentence. Sing a psalm or hymn. Talk about one good thing and one hard thing from the week.

Supplemental homeschooling is still household formation. Read How To Do Supplemental Homeschooling to begin with a simple weekly plan.

8. Honor Your Father

If you have a relationship with your dad, call him and ask what he thinks about some topic that interests you both. Do not argue. Learn.

If you do not have a good relationship with your dad, resolve in your heart to honor him in tone and attitude as often as he comes up.

This does not mean you must make foolish or sinful allowances for his shortcomings. It does mean that to be an honorable man, you must learn how to give honor to whom honor is due.

9. Sing in Church So Your People Can Hear You

Sing the congregational songs in church so your wife, children, and neighbors can hear you.

This is not performance art. It is encouragement and exhortation. A man’s voice in worship teaches more than he realizes. Let your household hear that praise belongs to God.

10. Start Regular Fellowship With Men in Your Church

Gather a few men regularly. Let there be righteous mirth, good food, Scripture, and honest conversation about the needs of your local church and neighborhood.

Eat, laugh, pray, speak plainly, and look for ways to do good together.

11. Learn Patience When It Comes to Change

Your new good habits will not immediately heal every wound or rift you may have created beforehand.

Know that. Be patient and prayerful.

If you have been harsh, lazy, absent, foolish, cowardly, or unstable, one good week will not erase the memory of it. But do not despise small obedience. Keep going. Repent clearly. Practice steadily. Give the people around you time to see the fruit.
